Brush Your Teeth Rover and Sassy!

pet's teeth

One of the number one preventable health problems for our pets is bad teeth and gums. Most pet owners don't brush their pet's teeth because they don't know to, don't know how, or just don't want to.

Dental disease, especially in older pets can lead to a number of serious health issues. These problems will end up costing you much more than a animal toothbrush and toothpaste. What’s more, the American Veterinary Dental Society reports that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three.

Veterinarians suggest that pets teeth be brushed two times a week, and that you use a toothpaste made specifically for dogs and cats. Dogs can supplement brushings by having plenty of chews which help rub out plaque. You can attempt to brush your cat's teeth with a small baby toothbrush or one purchased for small mouths and toothpaste made especially for animals (flavored with meat or fish) human toothpaste can cause vomiting and should never be used on pets.

The majority of cats will fight you when you try and open their mouth to brush their teeth. To acclimate your pet to brushing start slowly and gradually. First use your finger and dip it into beef boullion for dogs or tuna water for cats and rub it along the gum line and teeth. This are is where most bacteria and food accumulate to form plaque. Start at the front of the mouth and move to the upper back and lower back teeth and gums.

Once your pet is okay with this amount of touching wrap gauze around your finger and very slowly and gently begin rubbing his/her teeth and gums in small circular movements. After your pet is accustomed to the gauze try an animal toothbrush or an ultra-sensitive toothbrust for humans.

It is essential that you get the proper size toothbrush for your pet. Hold the brush so that the bristles are at a forty five degree angle to the tooth and brush in an oval motion. Be sure to scrub the gum line where the bacteria builds up and causes plaque and bad breathe. Gradually you can add flavored animal toothpaste but never human toothpaste or baking soda.

Yearly visits to your veterinarian for your pet's teeth cleaning is recommended. . Serving dry food along with or instead of soft foods will also aid in good dental health care. With good home care and routine cleanings most dental diseases can be cured and prevented and it can add up to five years to your pet's life.

Nice Doggie

One fall day Bill was out raking leaves when he noticed a hearse slowly drive by.

Following the first hearse was a second hearse, which was followed by a man walking solemnly along, followed by a dog, and then about 200 men walking in single file.

Intrigued, Bill went up to the man following the second hearse and asked him who was in the first hearse. "My wife," the man replied. "I'm sorry," said Bill. "What happened to her?" "My dog bit her and she died." Bill then asked the man who was in the second hearse.

The man replied, "My mother-in-law. My dog bit her and she died as well."

Bill thought about this for a while. He finally asked the man, "Can I borrow your dog?"

To which the man replied, "Get in line."

Adhesive tape for bandages
Nonstick bandages (i.e., Telfa pads) to protect wounds or control bleeding
Towels and cloth (For bleeding or wrapping an injury)
Hydrogen peroxide (3 percent) Used to clean wound.
Milk of Magnesia or activated charcoal to absorb poison (Be sure to get the advice of your veterinarian or local poison control center before inducing vomiting or treating an animal for poisoning.)
Large syringe without needle or eyedropper (to give oral treatments)
Muzzle to avoid being bit. Use a soft cloth, rope, necktie, or nylon stocking. Use a towel to cover a small animal's head. Do not use in case of vomiting.

Stem Cell Therapy Helping Dogs

C
anines suffering from Muscular Dystrophy have shown remarkable results from stem cell therapy.
The mesoangioblasts injected showed a strengthening of muscle tissue in the stricken dogs say scientists in Italy and France.

Mesoangioblasts are the stem cells which turn into muscle cells.

Mice were used in the original studies but since dogs also suffer from MD in a way very similar to humans the scientists decied to change test subjects.

It is believed that humans may eventually benefit from these studies as well.

The cells used were collected from healthy dogs and dogs suffering from Duchenne MD.

The MD dogs cells were modified so that the mutated gene causing MD was corrected.

After this, the dogs were given the mesoangioblasts one time a month for the following five months.

They found that the MD dogs which received mesoangioblasts from healthy dogs benefited more than those which received "corrected" mesoangioblasts.

Four out the six dogs used in the experiment began to show a return of dystrophin and muscle strength.

One dog treated early in his MD was able to continue walking. Two more with more advanced Muscular Dystrophy regained their mobility.

Scientists believe that two dogs who did not show improvement would probably gain from higher concentrates of the mesoangioblasts.

It is hoped that when humans are finally allowed to be treated with stem cell therapy for Muscular Dystrophy that their own corrected stem cells can be used.

Although scientists did note that the dogs which received stem cells from healthy dogs did have better results over the dogs given their own corrected cells.

It is hoped through more research that the difference between corrected stem cells and cells from a healthy subject will be surmounted.

The ideal scenario is for a subject to receive his own cells so that his immune system will not reject the cells implanted.
